Mariko Tatsumoto
Mariko Tatsumoto emigrated from Japan at the age of eight and was detoured from her love of books by becoming the first Asian woman attorney in Colorado. But she found her way back to writing historical novels. AYUMI'S VIOLIN, her Middle Grade novel, and her YA novel, SWEPT AWAY, garnered a total of seven literary awards, including the RMFW’s Gold Award, and the Paterson Prize for Books for Young People. After learning to write for young people through the school of hard knocks, she published HOW TO WRITE A MIDDLE GRADE BOOK KIDS WILL LOVE so others wouldn’t have to. Her adult novel, BLOSSOMS ON A POISONED SEA, is based on the same true events that inspired Johnny Depp’s film, Minamata.
